Sports betting in Canada: the basics and our four sportsbooks
Since 2021, provinces have been able to offer or license betting on single games, not just parlays. Ontario is the only province with a regulated private market (through iGaming Ontario). Elsewhere, provincial lottery sites compete with international sportsbooks. Our four featured brands (BetNeptune, AceLucky, LekkerBets and AfricaSports) combine a sportsbook with a casino on one wallet. None is registered in Ontario.

Before 2021, Canadian provinces could only offer parlay bets combining several games. A federal amendment to the Criminal Code that year allowed betting on a single game, and provinces decide how to offer it. Ontario opened a regulated market for private operators in 2022, run through iGaming Ontario. Other provinces mostly offer single-game betting through their own lottery or gaming corporations. The sportsbooks we list are licensed outside Canada, which matters if you ever need to complain: your provincial regulator can't help.
Reading odds without the jargon
Decimal odds (common on international books) show the total return per $1, stake included: 1.80 returns $1.80.
American odds (common in North American media): −150 means stake $150 to win $100; +130 means $100 wins $130.
Implied probability is 1 ÷ decimal odds. Add up the implied probabilities for every outcome in a market. The amount over 100% is the bookmaker's margin, your cost of betting.
Common bet types
Moneyline: pick the winner.
Spread / puck line / run line: the favourite must win by more than a set margin.
Totals (over/under): combined points or goals above or below a line.
Parlays: several picks combined. Bigger payouts, but every leg must win, and the margin compounds.
In-play: betting while the game is on. It's fast, which makes stake limits especially useful.
Choosing between our four sportsbooks
If sports come first, AfricaSports (football-led) and LekkerBets (sports-first layout) put betting up front. BetNeptune balances casino and sports. AceLucky is a casino with a sports tab. At the time of writing, their sports promotions included football cashback deals, but promotions differ by market, so read them from a Canadian login. All four let you set deposit, stake and loss limits yourself, applied across the whole network.
Betting with limits
Sports betting feels skill-based, which can make losses feel recoverable. They aren't, unless you have a genuine, proven edge over the bookmaker's margin, and very few people do. Set a monthly budget, use a stake limit, and avoid chasing losses with bigger in-play bets. Help across Canada.
Sports betting questions
Is single-game sports betting legal in Canada?
Yes. A 2021 federal change to the Criminal Code allowed provinces to offer or license betting on single games. How you can bet depends on your province; in Ontario, private sportsbooks must be registered with iGaming Ontario.
Which sportsbooks does CasinoNook list?
BetNeptune, AceLucky, LekkerBets and AfricaSports each have a sports tab alongside their casino and live casino. LekkerBets and AfricaSports lead with sports; AfricaSports is football-first.
What are decimal odds?
Decimal odds show your total return per dollar staked, including the stake. Odds of 2.50 return $2.50 for every $1 on a winning bet, so $1.50 of profit.
Are the welcome offers on these sportsbooks for sports bets?
The Canadian welcome offers for the four featured brands are casino bonuses with 10x wagering. Sports promotions such as cashback deals are separate and can vary by market.
